On June 17, Calbee's potato chips in black-and-white packaging began appearing at FamilyMart convenience stores in Japan. The company is gradually rolling out monochrome designs across its flagship products, citing unstable supplies of printing ink made from naphtha due to disruptions in the Middle East.
At one FamilyMart store, the black-and-white bags labeled "Petroleum resource-saving packaging" were displayed alongside brightly colored snack packages in the aisle.

Part of Broader Packaging Shift
According to a FamilyMart spokesperson, the monochrome versions are being introduced nationwide through June, depending on inventory levels.
Since late May, Calbee has been gradually switching 14 products, including core items such as Kappa Ebisen shrimp chips and Frugra cereal, to the new black-and-white packaging.
