Japanese electronics company Hitachi Ltd announced on May 19 that it has partnered with US artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. The partnership will allow Hitachi to offer clients services powered by safe, high-performance AI and to explore practical uses of physical AI, technology that enables machines to operate autonomously.

As part of the effort, Hitachi will establish a new cross-regional organization spanning the United States, Europe, and Asia. Staffed by 100 specialists from both companies, the group will study how physical AI can be applied in real-world settings.

Claude to Power Business Systems

Hitachi aims to use Anthropic's advanced Claude AI model to develop and operate systems that improve client productivity across a wide range of sectors, including power, transportation, manufacturing, and finance. The technology will also be deployed internally as part of Hitachi's efforts to overhaul its own internal operations.

The partnership does not include Claude Mythos, Anthropic's latest AI model, which is said to be far more capable of identifying cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

IT corporation NEC also announced a partnership with Anthropic in April to develop AI services for corporate clients, highlighting the US startup's growing ties with Japanese companies.
