On April 1, it emerged that All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) plan to sharply increase fuel surcharges on international flights from June.
The hike will coincide with the peak summer travel season, raising concerns about a potential impact on tourism demand.
Fuel surcharges are added on top of ticket prices to offset fluctuations in fuel costs. For flights to Europe and North America in June and July, ANA is expected to set the surcharge at ¥55,000 (around $350), while JAL's is likely to be ¥50,000.

Global Impact
The rise in jet fuel prices has impacted the aviation industry globally, with other airlines also increasing surcharges or ticket prices. According to the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong's flag carrier Cathay Pacific raised its fuel surcharge by 34% starting April 1.
Meanwhile, Air New Zealand has suspended its fiscal 2026 earnings forecast and raised fares on some flights, Reuters reported.
