Deep in the mountainous Kii Peninsula, the annual raft descent event has begun in Kitayama Village, Wakayama Prefecture. Participants ride log rafts through fast-flowing rapids while taking in the surrounding mountain scenery along the way. Wearing life jackets, riders are drenched by splashing water and cheer with excitement. The activity runs through the end of September.

The rafting experience first launched in 1979. By last year, around 250,000 people had taken part in total, with participation last year alone surpassing 10,000 for the first time.

70-Minute Adventure

The course follows roughly 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) of the Kitayama River, a tributary of the Kumano River, and takes about 70 minutes to complete. It passes through a lush green gorge, alternating between stretches of calm water and exhilarating rapids.

A 10-year-old fourth-grader from Mie Prefecture grinned and said, "It was a bit scary, but the splashing water was really fun."

Participants must be between 10 and 75 years old, and reservations are required.
