Team Mirai leader Takahiro Anno said on Wednesday that he was ready to give Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi private tuition on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), after Takaichi asked him during a party leaders' debate in the Diet to serve as her "tutor."
Team Mirai, a tech-oriented party founded by Anno, entered the Lower House for the first time in February's snap election, winning 11 seats on a platform centered on using AI and digital technology to reshape politics and government administration.
"I will come prepared," Anno told reporters after the debate, signaling his willingness to provide one-on-one instruction.
Reflecting on his first-ever appearance in a party leaders' debate, he said he was "as nervous as when I went to my first interview for a tutoring job as a university student."

Anno, an AI engineer, used the debate to raise concerns about the rapid evolution of AI. Speaking to reporters, he said the technology was moving beyond search and conversation and entering the stage of "AI agents" capable of carrying out tasks autonomously.
"I would like to explain directly [to the prime minister], if there is an opportunity, just how wide the range of possible uses has become," he said.
During the debate, Anno stressed that AI's impact on society would be comparable to the Industrial Revolution. "Japan's future will depend on how much we can make AI work, work, and work," he said, echoing Takaichi's own trademark phrase.
He then urged Takaichi to experience the latest AI tools firsthand. "I would ask the prime minister to try using them herself," he said, adding, "If necessary, I'm always ready to come as her tutor."
Takaichi responded, "A tutor? Absolutely," drawing laughter in the committee room.
As Anno left the room after the debate, Kiyomi Tsujimoto, an Upper House lawmaker from the Constitutional Democratic Party who had been watching from the gallery, also called out to him: "I'd like to ask you to be my tutor, too."
