Monthly utility bills are set to rise across Japan. All 10 major power companies and 4 major city gas providers announced increases for April usage (billed in May).

The government had temporarily reinstated subsidies for electricity and gas between January and March, when winter heating demand peaks, but those measures have now ended. The impact of recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran is expected to be reflected in bills from June.

In Japan, utilities use a "model household" — based on fixed monthly energy use of about 260 kWh — as a benchmark to compare rates. Electricity bills for this model household are expected to rise by about ¥393 to ¥463 (around $3) from the previous month, while city gas bills will increase by roughly ¥148 to ¥195 (around $1). The exact amount varies by region and provider.

Regional Differences

Using this benchmark, Hokkaido will have the highest electricity bill at ¥9,457 (around $60), followed by Okinawa at ¥9,216. Kyushu will be the cheapest at ¥7,569. For city gas, Toho Gas will be the most expensive at ¥6,570, while Tokyo Gas will be the lowest at ¥5,747.

Electricity prices will also reflect an increase in the surcharge used to support renewable energy.
