Panasonic unveils a long-lasting all-solid-state battery for extreme heat, shifting from EV rivalry to industrial demand while boosting lithium-ion performance.

Panasonic Holdings (HD) announced on September 18 that it will launch production of button-type all-solid-state batteries engineered for high heat resistance. 

Capable of charging and discharging even at 125°C, they are the world's first of their kind, developed for industrial machinery and automotive sensors. Sample shipments are set to begin next fiscal year. 

If commercialized, the batteries will mark the Panasonic Group's first step into all-solid-state technology.

From EV Rivalry to Industrial Opportunity

The breakthrough comes from Panasonic Energy, the HD subsidiary that handles electric vehicle (EV) batteries and related products. Unlike conventional batteries that rely on liquid electrolytes, all-solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes. This makes them safer, eliminates the risk of leakage, and allows for greater design flexibility.

Global automakers are racing to develop all-solid-state batteries for EVs. Panasonic, however, is taking a different approach by targeting the industrial machinery sector. Here, performance in high-temperature environments and long lifespan are critical. The company sees this as a market poised for growth.

In parallel, Panasonic announced plans to boost the volumetric energy density of its existing lithium-ion EV batteries by fiscal 2025. This upgrade is expected to deliver a more than 12% improvement over current mass-produced models, to reach 25% by fiscal 2027.

As Chinese manufacturers gain ground in the EV battery market with low costs and rapid charging, Panasonic aims to compete by leveraging its strengths in high capacity and proven safety.
