Mao Shimada and Rio Nakata retained their titles at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships, an annual competition that concluded over the weekend of March 6-8 in Tallinn, Estonia.
On Saturday, Shimada captured her record-extending fourth consecutive junior women's title, an unprecedented run that began in 2023 in Calgary, Canada.

Shimada, 17, led after the short program with 71.90 points. She was second in the free skate (137.01) and topped the chart with 208.91 points after her crowd-pleasing rendition of "Miracle."
"My goal today was to just finish, not being nervous or anything, just to finish, and I was exhausted," Shimada said. "However, I was able to finish my performance and I think the fact that I never gave up led to this result of four consecutive wins."

Shimada felt ill in Estonia, but her condition improved before the free skate.
"I was bedridden yesterday," Shimada revealed on Friday. "I thought, 'OK, there's nothing I can do but to withdraw.' However, when I woke up this morning, I was feeling a little bit better."
Bath, Oka Also Earn Women's Medals
Australia's Hana Bath, who had the most points in the free skate (138.44), earned the silver medal (205.39).
Mayuko Oka, making her debut at the world junior championships at age 16, placed third with 197.17 points.
Oka was in second place after the short program (69.77).
In the free skate, she successfully landed six triple jumps. Her triple axel, however, was unsuccessful.
"I had some mistakes on my jumps but I was able to enjoy my performance until the end, and I was able to keep myself calm and focused," Oka said.

Nakata Showcases Figure Skating Talent
In the men's competition, 17-year-old Nakata led after the short program (89.51). He held on to the top spot with a strong showing in Friday's free skate (178.96, a personal-best score). Nakata finished with a two-day total of 268.47 points, a personal-best overall total.
His impressive skills on display included a quadruple salchow and a quad toe/triple toe combination.
It was Nakata's final performance in the junior ranks.
"When I landed my first quad I was relieved and I had confidence for my second quad," Nakata said. "Then there were just triples left, they were easier than quads. I was just happy to skate clean."
Nakata is eager for the new challenge that lies ahead.
"Next season in the senior circuit, I'll have difficult competition," he said, according to the International Skating Union website. "I'm looking forward to competing with all these great skaters."
South Korea's Minkyu Seo claimed his second consecutive runner-up finish in this global event with 243.91, followed by Japan's Taiga Nishino (241.23).
