A monorail car, suspended from its rails, narrowly passes by a store and apartment building. Looking up at the rails leading into the Shonan Monorail depot, it's hard not to feel a bit tense.

The Shonan Monorail serves the coastal region of Kanagawa Prefecture, connecting Ofuna Station in Kamakura to the Shonan-enoshima area.

Part of Daily Life

Since its opening in 1970, the Shonan Monorail has become a part of the local landscape. In 1974, the nearby Yamaka supermarket opened. To accommodate the monorail's path, the building was designed with the first floor of the adjacent apartment complex extending outward.

Keita Uemura, a five-year-old who lives nearby, expressed his excitement as he watched the monorail glide just a meter above the store. "It’s so close!" he exclaimed.

While the Shonan Monorail may be an everyday sight for local residents, its proximity to daily life continues to draw visitors.
