Hollywood star Tom Cruise has arrived in Japan to promote the highly anticipated eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. The film opens in Japanese theaters on May 23.
Speaking at a press conference held at a Tokyo cinema, Cruise reflected on the significance of the film. "The Final Reckoning is the culmination of 30 years of this franchise, and the love was felt," he said.
This visit marks Cruise's 25th trip to Japan and his first in three years. He was joined on stage by director Christopher McQuarrie and fellow cast members. During the event, Cruise took a moment to introduce legendary subtitle translator Natsuko Toda, who was in the audience. He praised her for "pouring her heart and soul" into the film's Japanese subtitles.
Iconic Action
In the film, Cruise reprises his iconic role as secret agent Ethan Hunt. He once again performs jaw-dropping stunts both in the air and underwater — standout features of the new installment. He laughed as he recalled walking on the wing of a flying airplane and couldn't breathe because of the wind.
Cruise also shared behind-the-scenes details about filming the underwater sequences. He noted that McQuarrie even joined him in the water to maximize filming opportunities. The two communicated through hand signals during the shoot.
