In Sumida Ward, police discovered the severed head and limbs of a newborn baby in a refrigerator at a sex-related business. On December 18, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's First Criminal Investigation Division arrested 22-year-old Rei Obara, a homeless employee of the establishment, on suspicion of abandoning and mutilating a corpse.

Obara admitted the allegations, saying, "I lost consciousness during the birth, and when I woke up, the baby had discolored. I couldn't leave it as it was, so I decided to dismember it." The infant was confirmed to be a girl.

Timeline of the Crime

According to police, Obara allegedly dismembered her newborn daughter's body in early March and left the head and limbs at her workplace.

The case came to light on December 6, when a male employee at the establishment discovered the remains and called emergency services. The limbs were stored in food containers, while the head was placed in a plastic bag.

DNA testing confirmed a biological relationship between Obara and the infant, and fingerprints on the bag containing the head matched Obara's. She told police that she had "discarded" the torso. Investigators are continuing to examine the full circumstances of the case.
