The shopping arcade connecting the famous Kaminarimon Gate to the main hall of Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa has received a long-awaited upgrade. Known as "Nakamise Shopping Street," it has undergone its first major refurbishment since 1945. The newly restored roof was unveiled to the press on March 6.

The old copper roof, aged to a green patina over time, has been replaced with a striking reddish-brown finish. According to Kaname, a roofing company based in Utsunomiya City, the roof had deteriorated, causing leaks and prompting renovations that began in June 2024.
'A Fresh Start'
The project used approximately 7,100 new copper plates to repair the roofs of 13 buildings, covering a total of 2,138 square meters (about 23,000 sq ft).

Senso-ji's chief administrator expressed his excitement, saying, "The shine is beautiful, and it’s thrilling to imagine how the color will gradually evolve over time."
Masako Takashima, an 81-year-old accessory shop owner on Nakamise Street, said, "I'm happy the entrance to Senso-ji looks so clean. It feels like a fresh start to welcome our customers."
