The newly released "LAMY safari – JETSTREAM inside" ballpoint pen from Mitsubishi Pencil is making waves.

In 2024, Mitsubishi Pencil acquired German writing instrument manufacturer Lamy, headquartered in Heidelberg, as a consolidated subsidiary. This partnership led to the creation of a new product combining the iconic LAMY safari series — a cornerstone of the LAMY brand — with Mitsubishi Pencil's oil-based JETSTREAM ink.

Best of Both Worlds

Since its launch in 1980, the LAMY safari has been a favorite among writing enthusiasts worldwide. It blends functional beauty with practicality — perfect for daily use, studying, and business alike.

Mitsubishi Pencil's JETSTREAM ink, known for its tagline "addictive, smooth writing experience," has gained a reputation for its silky feel. Since its domestic debut in 2006, it has pioneered low-viscosity oil-based ink, praised for its quick-drying properties, smooth flow, and ability to produce dark, crisp lines even with fine tips. With over 100 million units sold annually worldwide, JETSTREAM has become a global success.

The "LAMY safari – JETSTREAM inside" brings together the best of both brands — LAMY's sleek design expertise and Mitsubishi Pencil's cutting-edge ink technology. This release marks the first step in their collaboration, with both companies aiming to develop even more innovative products.

Priced at ¥3,630 JPY (about $24 USD), the pen comes in seven colors: classic LAMY safari shades — vista, blue, red, umbra, and yellow — along with two limited-edition colors, dark dusk and sunset. Replacement refills M17EF (0.5mm) and M17F (0.7mm) are also available for ¥1,100.

Reactions

Since its release on January 29, the pen has steadily gained traction, with positive reviews flooding social media.

"When two favorites come together, it's the best," one user wrote. Another posted, "I only use JETSTREAM pens, but I once debated getting a LAMY — now I'm overjoyed!" Some even declared, "The ultimate ballpoint pen has arrived."

Adding to the excitement is the pen's official integration of what was once a popular DIY hack among fans. Comments like, "LAMY users have been hacking their pens like this for years — now it's official?!" and "So many people have customized theirs already, so this is huge news," highlight fans' enthusiasm.

Moreover, the new refills are compatible with the existing M16 refills used in LAMY ballpoint pens, allowing users to upgrade their current pens with JETSTREAM ink.

Judging by the online buzz, the "LAMY safari – JETSTREAM inside" has successfully brought together two beloved brands, creating the ultimate writing experience.
