Princess Aiko, the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, celebrated her 23rd birthday on December 1. Over the past year, she has taken her first steps as a working adult. These included engaging in her first solo official duties outside Tokyo and building experience as an adult member of the Imperial Family.
A Year of Firsts
In October, Princess Aiko undertook a solo official visit to Saga Prefecture. There, she attended the National Sports Festival and explored local traditions.
At a Japanese papermaking workshop, she tried her hand at creating handmade paper. Smiling, she remarked, "My father had the same experience before and said it was challenging to make the paper even."
Princess Aiko prepared for her first solo regional duty through extensive consultations with her parents.
She was warmly welcomed in each region and had the opportunity to learn about local history and traditions. According to a close aide, "She appeared deeply grateful and delighted by the experience."
Balancing Duty and Leisure
Since April, Princess Aiko has also started working as a member of the Japanese Red Cross Society's youth and volunteer division. Her contributions include magazine editing and event planning.
Alongside her professional and public duties, she attended several Imperial events for the first time. These included the annual garden party, state luncheons for foreign dignitaries, and tea gatherings with recipients of the Order of Culture. It has been a year full of firsts for the young royal.
Amid her busy schedule, Princess Aiko finds time to unwind at the Imperial Palace, enjoying moments with her dog Yuri and cat Seven. She also plays sports such as volleyball and tennis, embracing an active and balanced lifestyle.
