Tokyo's cherry blossoms reached full bloom on March 28, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. This is about three days earlier than the historical average and two days earlier than in 2025.

Earlier Than Average Bloom

The agency tracks a single reference tree, a Somei-yoshino at Yasukuni Shrine. "Full bloom" means at least 80% of the blossoms are open. This year, the first flowers appeared on March 19.

The weather company Weathernews expects much of eastern and western Japan to hit peak bloom within the week. The cherry blossom front will then push north through Tohoku before reaching Hokkaido in late April.
