The New Year's General Public Greeting was held on January 2 at the Imperial Palace. His Majesty Emperor Naruhito and Her Majesty Empress Masako, together with other members of the Imperial Family, including Crown Prince Akishino (Fumihito) and Crown Princess Akishino Kiko, appeared on the balcony of Chowaden Hall to receive greetings from the public. Prince Hisahito, the son of Crown Prince Akishino, attended the event for the first time.

New Year Message

In his address, the Emperor said he was pleased to celebrate the New Year together with those in attendance, while also expressing concern that many people are facing difficult circumstances, with natural disasters occurring in various parts of the country.

He said, "I am concerned that many people are living under challenging conditions. Although there may be hardships ahead, I hope that this year will be a peaceful and good one for everyone."

Other Imperial Family Members

At the first greeting session, which began at 10:10 AM, Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko attended, along with the Emperor and Empress's eldest daughter, Princess Aiko. Princess Kako, the second daughter of Crown Prince Akishino and Princess Akishino, was also present. Other members of the Imperial Family included Princess Hanako of Hitachi, Princess Nobuko of Mikasa, Princess Akiko of Mikasa, Princess Hisako of Takamado, and her eldest daughter, Princess Tsuguko.

More than 15,000 people had lined up in front of the Imperial Palace's main gate before entry began at 9:30 AM.
