On May 15, the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced they would be starting a new unique project in collaboration with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
Joining forces with the creators of the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series, the plan is to launch Gundam figurines into space as a message in support of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. The project will make use of JAXA expertise, as well as the collaboration of the School of Engineering at Tokyo University.
Two figurines are scheduled for take off - the famous “Gundam” and the “Gundam Fix Figuration Composite”. Both are about 10 centimeters high.
The models themselves will be transported into space on a 10 by 30 centimeters microsatellite. They are set to take for the International Space Station (ISS) in March 2020, after which the microsatellite will take them further into space.
Once the microsatellite is in orbit, a device will detach and send an image to earth, which is predicted to be broadcast on social media.
The anime Mobile Suit Gundam was first televised in 1979 and subsequently became a popular series with numerous spinoffs.
Some of the related goods include models which can be assembled, which are extremely popular both at home and abroad.
