Eiko Kadono

Eiko Kadono is a Japanese author of children's literature, picture books, non-fiction, and essays. She was born in 1935 in Tokyo, Japan. She is a graduate of Waseda University. In 1969, she emigrated to Brazil with her designer husband where they spent two years. In 1970, she released her debut work, a non-fiction story called, Brazil and My Friend Luizinho (in Japanese, 1970), based on her experience in Brazil. Kadono’s best known works include Kiki’s Delivery Service (English edition, Annick Press, 2013), 1945 The Forest Tunnel (トンネルの森1945, in Japanese, by Kadokawa Media Factory, 2015), and well over 100 other books. In 1982, she received the Sankei Children’s Book Award, and this year she won the 2018 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing.
