On September 6, the press was given a sneak peek of the nighttime illumination event at Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The stars of the show were the summer cypresses, or kochia, which covered the entire hillside.
The event made its comeback on September 8, following a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Summer cypress is an annual plant, recognized for its distinctive round appearance. It goes by several names, including kochia and Mexican fireweed.
A Nighttime Rainbow
During the event, about 33,000 summer cypresses are illuminated as the sun sets. At the preview, a rainbow of colors bathed the green plants in sync with the music, creating a magical atmosphere.
Ju Tanaka, the public relations officer for the Hitachi Seaside Park Office, says, "We hope visitors will have an exciting time with their loved ones."
This special event runs from 5:30 pm to 9:15 pm on Fridays, weekends, and holidays until October 1. Visitors can also look forward to stage shows and food and drink events at the venue.
